Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier

Luxembourg’s CSSF provides a searchable database of authorised and supervised entities. Check the entity category and its actual services: a banking, investment-firm, fund, or other financial entry is not a universal trading permission.

Trust tier

Established regulator

TIER IIRank 2

Recognized regulator, but protection, enforcement, and compensation can vary by product and entity.

Scope

Banks, investment firms, and other CSSF-supervised financial entities with category-specific authorisations; verify the investment services actually permitted.

Protection

SIIL covers eligible claims against member institutions up to EUR 20,000 per person and institution under its rules. It does not cover market-value losses; professional and institutional investors and other excluded categories are not covered.

What it means

How to read CSSF regulation

  • The CSSF Search Entities database is the official starting point for checking the Luxembourg legal entity.
  • SIIL is an investor-compensation arrangement for eligible claims, not a guarantee of investment value.
  • The account’s institution, activity, and client classification determine which protections may apply.

Limits

What this signal does not guarantee

  • A fund or other financial listing does not give every related business permission to act as a retail broker.
  • A Luxembourg group entity does not automatically cover accounts opened with another affiliate.
  • This guide does not confirm a broker’s authorisation or entitlement to SIIL compensation.

How to check this license

1

Search the full legal name in CSSF Search Entities and inspect its category and status.

2

Check that the permitted services and the account agreement refer to the same legal entity.

3

Review SIIL membership and exclusions, and distinguish investment custody from any bank-deposit arrangement.

Red flags

When to be careful

  • The firm presents a different Luxembourg group entity’s record as its own authorisation.
  • SIIL is marketed as insurance against market losses or as unlimited coverage.
  • A payment, fund, or other unrelated entry is described as a general retail brokerage licence.

Important disclosure

Broker research, not investment advice

Availability, fees, investor protection, and regulation can vary by country and legal entity. Verify the broker and regulator details directly before opening an account.
