Polish Financial Supervision Authority

KNF, also known in English as the PFSA, licenses and supervises Polish financial institutions. Its investment-firm records distinguish domestic firms, foreign firms with or without branches, and tied agents; these are not interchangeable permissions.

Established regulator

TIER IIRank 2

Recognized regulator, but protection, enforcement, and compensation can vary by product and entity.

Scope

Brokerage-house or bank brokerage permissions, foreign investment-firm services, branches, or tied-agent entries, each with its own recorded activities.

Protection

The KDPW compensation scheme covers eligible missing cash and financial instruments subject to its rules. KDPW states a maximum compensation of EUR 20,100 per investor; investment losses are excluded. Confirm the contracting firm participates.

What it means

How to read KNF / PFSA regulation

  • The KNF entity search and investment-firm register help identify the legal entity and brokerage activities.
  • PFSA and KNF refer to the same Polish authority, not two independent licences.
  • A foreign-firm entry needs a separate check of home-state supervision and compensation arrangements.

Limits

What this signal does not guarantee

  • A Polish register entry does not necessarily mean the firm holds a domestic Polish brokerage licence.
  • Compensation does not reimburse ordinary investment losses or automatically cover every client.
  • A regulator profile does not verify a broker’s current authorisation or the entity serving your account.

How to check this license

1

Search the legal name in the KNF entity search; open the entry and check its category and activities.

2

Distinguish a domestic brokerage firm from a foreign firm, branch, or tied agent.

3

Match the account entity to the record and check the applicable compensation scheme with KDPW or the home-state authority.

Red flags

When to be careful

  • KNF and PFSA are presented as two separate regulatory approvals.
  • A tied-agent or foreign-firm entry is presented as a full domestic brokerage licence.
  • The broker promises reimbursement of all trading losses by KNF or KDPW.
